I
do not know what came over me. I had an urgent desire for something
sweet and decided to eat two plain digestive biscuits mid-morning.
This seemed harmless enough but within half an hour I was experiencing
palpitations and felt jumpy and out of sorts. I then had a bad headache,
which became intense by the evening. I had a headache for three days,
lived in fog, was unable to sleep, had earache, felt sick and to cap
it all put on half a stone overnight. I vowed never to go near sugar
again as long as I live, until the next time that is. Does this sound
familiar to you?
I discovered that I had Candidiasis on August 12th 1999. I will always remember that date because from then on my life changed. I had suspected for the previous twelve years that I had a food sensitivity problem but never managed to find out the cause. At an appointment for an allergy test at a local chemist I was informed that I had an allergy to yeast, sugar and citrus fruits. The person who tested me suggested that I read a book on Candida before I made any changes to my diet. I bought one there and then and took it home to read. It was a revolution to me, it explained so much about me that I started on the anti-candida diet immediately. It was just as if someone had waived a magic wand over me. Some conditions (heartburn and a silly cough that I had experienced every day for three months) literally vanished overnight, others (intestinal gas and bloating) took a few weeks. Eight months later I am two stones lighter, happier and calmer. My giddiness, irritable bowel problem, and drowsiness when driving have now gone. My constant headache and muzzy brain only reappear when I eat something I should not. I still get some catarrh in the morning and minor skin sensitivities but I am hoping these will eventually clear up. I have spent some time in India and when I looked back I realized that my symptoms always improved when I was there but came back with a bang the day after I returned. I looked at my Indian diet more closely. We ate only simple food, spicy vegetables, daals, yeast-free breads, natural home-made yoghurt, fresh organic salads with plenty of raw onions and garlic. The spices were all fresh so had less chance of containing mould than the ones that you can buy from the supermarket or corner shop. I have long had an interest in Ayurvedic medicine and know that in fact these spices are very good for you, they are natures anti-oxidants and antiseptics. Maybe they also have a part to play in helping to rid the body of Candida. (Courtsey Nutritional Therapist: pam@candidadiet.com) |
